Blood Pressure Check
Known as the silent killer, majority of people with hypertension are unaware they have it.
Book your appointment at a time and place that's convenient for you.
Worldwide it's estimated that 1.28 billion adults aged 30 - 79 years old have high blood pressure (hypertension). If left untreated, hypertension significantly increases the risks of heart, brain, kidney and other diseases. Your pharmacist can get your blood pressure checked and discuss what the numbers mean with you.
What's involved in a blood pressure check?
Your pharmacist will use a machine to measure your blood pressure and discuss your current lifestyle with you.
Body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, total cholesterol and blood glucose levels.
Blood pressure – high blood pressure (hypertension) can have no warning signs and lead to life-threatening conditions like a heart attack or stroke.
Cholesterol – high cholesterol can similarly lead to heart attack or stroke.
Blood glucose – vital in screening for diabetes.
What do your numbers mean?
Your blood pressure measurement is expressed with two numbers, the top number (systolic) and bottom number (diastolic), like a fraction. For example, 120/80.
Both numbers are important. Numbers greater than the ideal range indicate that your heart is working too hard to pump blood to the rest of your body. Keeping your blood pressure in the normal range is important to prevent further complications. That is why it is important to have your Doctor, Pharmacist or Nurse explain what your numbers mean.
SYSTOLIC - The top number refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries during contraction of your heart muscle. This is called systolic pressure.
DIASTOLIC - The bottom number refers to your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats. This is called diastolic pressure.
